Box 7533 University Station Provo, Utah 84602 Dear Dr. Hall: I am delighted to inform you, on behalf of the Council of The American Physical Society, that you, Francis Bundy, Herbert Strong and Robert Wentorf, Jr. have been selected as the recipients of The American Physical Society International Prize for New Materials, sponsored by the International Business Machines Corporation. The purpose of this Prize is to recognize and encourage outstanding achievement in the science and application of new materials. The total stipend for the prize is $5000 of which you will receive $1250 and a certificate citing your contribution. A travel allowance up to $200 is also provided for you to attend the meeting at which the prize will be bestowed. The citation which the Prize Committee has composed reads as follows: "For their outstanding research contributions and inventions which include the first reproducible process for making diamond; the synthesis of cubic boron nitride; and the development of the high pressure processes that are required to produce these materials." The Council asks that you attend the Ceremonial Session at the APS March Meeting on Tuesday, 22 March 1977, in San Diego, California to accept your Prize. It is customary for Prize winners to give an invited paper, preferably on the work for which they receive the Prize, during the meeting at which the Prize is bestowed. This is in no way a condition for the bestowal of the Prize. I always try to make this clear, especially because I have been told that if the Prize seemed to be payment for the talk, it might be taxable. Congratulations on winning The American Physical Society Prize for New Materials. The announcement that you are the winner of this Prize and the citation will be published in the January, 1977 BULLETIN. Sincerely yours W. w. Havens, Jr WWH:rg cc; Lewis Branscomb
